Stocking Up

Currently I am in "squirrel" mode. Making lists of supplies. What can I live without? What can I not live without? My job is to make sure we have the staples. Unfortunately we cannot bring any raw meats into Mexico so that leaves out bacon. As far as the dogs go, it's kind of a pain in the ass to get all their records together. Mexico requires a health certificate issued within 72 hours of arrival into the country. That means that the 2 days leading up to March 10th I will be dealing with trips to the vet. Oh joy.

Our friend Jeff will be accompanying us on the trip from San Diego to Aruba. He works as a mechanic and has extensive knowledge of boat engines.
Greg and Jeff's jobs are to outfit the boat with spare parts, tools, oil, extra this and that. West Marine and San Diego Port Supply are our best friends right now.

    Just wanted to wish you all well for the trip to Aruba and beyond. Kelly was very sorry that she could not make to the dinner last night, I think that I was able to cover her beer rations comfortably! We will all miss you, Cadbury is already pining for Monty. Jeff, if you need a ride from Ensenada just let us know, if the opportunity shows itself, it’s warm, breathing and almost human, get your pipes clean. I sure hope that I will be able to catch up with you guys one day on Water Witch. Again be safe and have fun in the sun. Later.

Well, hurricane season in Aruba somehow turned into a full-time position at the International School of Aruba for me and a part-time position and internship for Sam. We both accomplished our goals – letters of recommendation and experience. Not Quite Yet

After checking out of Aruba around 8:30 am on Monday, April 9th we started our 3 1/2 day trek to St. Maarten. We were about 3 miles outside of Aruba when Jeff noticed a strange noise and we all noticed a strange smell. Sure enough, the transmission was failing and then eventually we lost gears, meaning we couldn't move forward or backwards (well we could move slightly backwards but not good enough). Jeff mentioned he has seen this before and said sometimes the transmission comes back but we had to do something, so we called the Coast Guard/Port of Aruba to let them know the situation. We were like sitting ducks, couldn't go anywhere and the seas weren't being friendly. The Coast Guard said they could get a tow to us in 2 hours which meant a very uncomfortable situation for everyone. Captain's Blog-Bonaire to Sint Maarten

We made it to Bonaire – safely, and very, very happily. However, it was a sea trial in essence - we weren’t going to do a 450 nautical mile open ocean crossing at 4.5 knots with an overheating transmission. And the bilge/shower pumps needed to be fixed. That’s how Jeff went from passenger to crew. Jeff masterfully replaced the two bilge pumps and float switches that had somehow simultaneously malfunctioned. On a new island, with new eyes, we examined the transmission. We poured over the shop manual. * NOTE* This next part will be technical, and probably boring, for most, but I will try to explain it in terms that I (and everyone else) understands. The manual advised changing the angle of the oil cooler – Kenneth (Aruba mechanic) and I had changed its angle in our attempts to diagnose the gear issue, so maybe this was the problem.
