Bonaire

I’ll be the first one to admit that I am a horrible writer. We all know who the long winded author is in this family. With that said, I just wanted to give you an update on our most recent excursion. As most of you may know, we had a bit of a transmission problem leaving Aruba. With some adjustments we decided to press on and attempt to make it to Bonaire, a safer bet. We couldn’t go over 4.5 knots, otherwise we were afraid of blowing the transmission up. I’ll let Jeff or Greg explain all the details.

We arrived in Bonaire on April 13th. Friday the 13th. The anniversary……of the maiden voyage of the Titanic. Great.

All went well getting into the marina, piece of cake. We gathered everything we needed to check in, beers, passports, etc. and walked into downtown into customs.

On Saturday, April 14th, we went to Budget Marine (I know, how exciting!) and got some parts, walked around town, found a great Indonesian restaurant, got Jeff a much needed haircut, (he was starting to resemble Charles Manson) and got our bearings. According to the weather, we weren’t leaving Bonaire anytime soon. That was fine with all of us. The funny thing was that we thought that the marina we were staying at included many amenities. Nope. No pool, no access to the beach, no access to the really kick-ass pirate ship restaurant, no Wi-Fi, no nothing. That’s ok. We found a beach within walking distance that happens to be a dive site as well. Let’s just say all I needed was a pair of goggles and I could free dive and see over 20 species of fish. Monty seems to enjoy it as well.

In the meantime, Jeff and Greg have been laboring over the transmission, trying everything they can possibly think of. Yesterday Greg and I rented a car and ran some errands. We stopped by the shipping company and asked if they could ship out a transmission, if needed. They said they would get back to us in week and let us know if they could. Are we still in Aruba? Ugh.

If all goes as planned we will take off on Sunday and head to St. Croix. It should take about 3 days to get there, then its 100 miles to St. Maarten.

  1. Thanks for the update. Bonaire sounds like an excellent place to lay over a few days. Hope you get the mechanical problems resolved. Our favorite quote is "The Journey Is The Destination." We took lessons in "being where you are" from Jeff.
